Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

The Halcyon Focus 2.0 Black 2023 edition dive light will run up to 2.5 hours in high mode or 5 hours in low mode, making it ideal for a weekend of diving or any dive with long bottom and decompression time.

Its adjustable beam ranges from narrow "technical/signalling" mode to very wide mode.

The black body Halcyon Focus 2.0 uses two reflectors and a Fresnel lens to provide full focus adjustability with amazing output and greatly reduced power consumption.

The torch has three sealed compartments, isolating the LED core, the driver, and the cable gland. High-performance capacity is further augmented by a fully-adjustable handle, which can be set for left or right-hand operation and folded over the lens for protection during transport.

These unique features are powered by a small but powerful battery.

Halcyon Measuring Diving Light

Halcyon prefers to describe diving lights using lux because this provides a gauge of intensity at a given distance, which is probably more relevant while diving or during signalling. Halcyon typically tests lux output at one, three, and five meters from the light source. These distances appear useful when evaluating intensity for general use and while signalling a dive buddy.

A lux measurement that is very close to the light source will be higher than a lux measurement recorded farther from the same light source because light diffuses as it gets farther from the source. Therefore, you can think of lumens as the amount of light available and lux as the lumens that are actually arriving at the intended target.

Focus 2.0 Tightest Beam (Surface)

Halcyon Focus 2.0 Beam Surface Test

When switched on at its tightest beam the Halcyon Focus 2.0 will produce a square beam with a halo around it. The beam will reflect 4x LEDs with a darker "cross" in between which will disappear when the beam is slightly tuned out as below. Left: Beam at distance, Right: Beam closeup.
