Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

Apeks DST First Stage: High Performance & Versatile

The Apeks DST First Stage regulator is a versatile, high-performance option. Divers of all levels appreciate its capabilities. It is popular among technical and sidemount divers. This regulator builds upon the renowned Apeks DS4 First Stage. It retains all of its outstanding features.

The DST adds several new features. For example, these include a swivel turret for improved hose routing. Additionally, it also has a second HP port. Furthermore, there is even an option to add a 5th medium pressure port.

The standard medium-pressure ports are on a rotating turret. This allows optimal hose routing. It works for all configurations. These include single tanks, twinsets, and stage bottles. The DST version with a Fith Port is ideal for sidemount diving. The swivel turret, 2 HP ports, and up to 5 MP ports make it very versatile.

Like the Apeks DS4, the Apeks DST features an over-balanced design. Consequently, this means the intermediate pressure increases with depth. As a result, it results in a smoother breathing experience.

Furthermore, the DST uses a diaphragm to control gas flow. This is instead of a piston. Therefore, it is considered more durable and reliable in cold water. Additionally, the DST 1st stage has an environmentally sealed dry chamber. This, in turn, prevents water from contacting the spring. Ultimately, this helps prevent freezing.

In summary, much like the Apeks DS4, the Apeks DST First Stage regulator is a reliable workhorse. Furthermore, it has many additional features. Moreover, it also comes at a great price point. Consequently, the DST is well-respected in technical and sidemount diving. Indeed, it is often a first-choice regulator. This is especially true for stage bottles and sidemount. Therefore, the DST is ideal for twinsets and single tank configurations.

Apeks DST First Stage features:

  • Swivel turret improves hose routing.
  • Four medium-pressure ports (with a fifth port option) are on the turret.
  • Two high-pressure ports are on opposite sides of the body.
  • Diaphragm-type design ensures durability and cold-water performance.
  • Over-balanced design provides smooth breathing at depth.
  • Environmental dry chamber prevents freezing.

Pros of DST:

  • Versatile and adaptable
