Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

Extreme diving makes having an extraordinary Octopus even more important. The Atomic M1 Octopus is a Safe Second that performs equal to its M1 primary dive buddy. Cave diving, cold water and rough water conditions demand backup systems divers can count on when needed. The M1 Octopus delivers confidence in extreme situations.

M1 Monel Octopus

If you are diving with a primary specified for higher EAN mixtures, you need a Safe Second to match. Atomic M1 Octopus parts used throughout the second stage are identical to the M1 primary model.

The M1 Octopus is factory-ready for EAN mixtures up to 50% or Oxygen mixes up to 80% when special guidelines are followed.

Primary features built in to M1 Octo

Just like Atomic primary second stages, Atomic divers can expect the patented AFC Automatic Flow Control and Titanium Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice.

Like the M1 primary, the M1 Octopus includes a thermal heat sink for cold water and a super-dry exhaust valve for rough water.

The biggest difference is the high-visibility Neon Yellow surge-protected front cover and an extra-long 36” hose.

Comfort Swivel

Divers also shouldn’t have to worry about turning, twisting or looking over your shoulder. The popular Atomic Comfort Swivel removes that concern by allowing 30° range of motion without hose binding, pulling or kinking. The Comfort Swivel is polished Stainless Steel with black PVD coating.

Atomic M1 Octopus features

The M1 Octopus is factory rated for EAN mixtures up to 80% Oxygen. The demand valve body is Zirconium plated brass for fast thermal transfer with a heat sink feature to reduce the possibility of freezing in cold water.

  • Designed for cold water diving featuring a thermal heat sink and super-dry exhaust valve.
  • Patented Atomic AFC – Automatic Flow Control with Rapid Adjustment Knob for manual detuning in special situations.
  • Patented Atomic Titanium Seat Saving Dynamic Orifice prevents wear of the low-pressure seat that extends the service interval, and improves reliability.
  • Surge-protected front cover for high current scenarios.
  • Super-wide exhaust deflector to disperse bubbles.
  • Bright Neon Yellow flexible front cover for high visibility.
