Why Portland?

We’re located on the Isle of Portland (in Dorset) because Portland has been one of the most popular scuba diving locations in the United Kingdom even before we set up operations here back in the year 2000.

On one side, we’re minutes away from the sheltered waters of Portland Marina and Harbour, while on the other, it’s just a brief walk to reach our famous scuba diving destination Chesil Cove and start of the 16-mile-long Chesil Beach.

Portland’s location makes it ideal for scuba diving, freediving, snorkelling and other surface water sports activities.

Check out how many wrecks we have around here by clicking on Scimitar Diving's Wreck & Dive Sites chart!

Alongside dive clubs, many instructors and dive schools travel here to train and offer scuba diving certification ranging from open water diver to mixed-gas tech diving or rebreather diving levels.

Whether you’re doing a boat dive from Portland Marina or Castletown or a shore dive at Chesil Cove, Portland is well known for offering many possibilities: Reef diving to wreck diving and night diving, underwater photography or underwater videography. Anything other than cave diving is possible here.

Likely being the best-stocked diving shop in the UK, at Underwater Explorers we offer in-store scuba diving equipment advice and sales, as well as gas fills, to locals and visitors (read About Us).

But... If you’re googling “scuba diving shop near me” like some, look no further, there's DirDirect online.

Here at DirDirect, we list our cutting-edge equipment for worldwide delivery and we’ve got you covered whatever your level of diving: We’re your local dive store wherever you are in the world.

All that with over 20 years of experience especially in technical diving, from training to equipment, advice and sales.

Excellent for sport and performance divers, the DUI TLS350 Drysuit has set the industry standard for what divers have come to expect from a drysuit. It is durable, fast drying and lightweight for travel.

The TLS350 Drysuit is so versatile that it has become the primary choice for underwater photographers, deep cave explorers and the US Navy SEALs.

The TLS’ telescopic torso design yields a streamlined and self-donning suit. It allows enough material to be available for a full range of motion without at the same time promoting drag. Because fabric suits do not stretch as much as neoprene suits, the diver’s range of motion will be restricted if there is not enough material available. Also, to ensure longevity while maintaining a full range of motion, the number of seams must be kept to a minimum.

DUI TLS350 Drysuit features

  • Drysuit fabric is a trilaminate material made of nylon/butyl rubber/nylon in black
  • Diagonal front-entry zipper or Shoulder entry available
  • Telescoping torso and a crotch strap

  • Apeks swivel inlet and adjustable, automatic exhaust valves
  • Zipper guard
  • Warm neck collar
  • Internal waist adjustment cord
  • Colour choices

  • Zip Neck seal (silicone or latex)

History of the DUI TLS350

The DUI TLS350 drysuit is constructed with high-quality trilaminate materials that were initially developed to meet chemical warfare requirements. In the 1980's the US military requested a suit made of the lightest material available, which would demand little maintenance and be easily mended or patched if necessary.

At this time, combat swimmer suits were typically of the vulcanised rubber type, which, although tough, exhibited poor swimming characteristics.

While the military searched for a more suitable alternative, an actual swim test was needed to compare the vulcanised rubber suit to new designs quantitatively.

The test required swimmers to don their respective suits and swim a measured distance in a specified time. The TLS350 faired very well with respect to self-donning and “swimmability.” Interestingly enough, the features that made this suit desirable to military divers and search and rescue teams made it desirable to cave divers.
